My shaloots are now a good size. Would it be o.k to dig up, seperate and dry off?

I've just lifted most of mine today, the outer leaves had started to turn yellow and while everything is so dry thought it would be as good a time as any,
My grandfather always use to say shallots should be planted on the shortest day and lifted on the longest.
Not lifting mine just yet, the leaves are still not showing signs of yellowing and the bulbs are swelling nicely.
I planted mine mid to late March and a big percentage of them have swelled with many bulbs, but a few have about 2-3 inches of green
They haven't started yellowing yet so thought I leave it a little longer, tips are a little dry though. fingers croassed for some nice pickled onions!
Mine have about half yellow and half green leaves yet but all look like they have been rolled on by a medium sized animal. Don't know whether this is actually the case or whether they have been affected by anything nasty.
Forget all about time scales, wait until the tops are like straw, the bulbs lift slightly out of the ground. Then take them off the surface. That way you get maximum for your money.
