    Hi,

I've planted some sprouts 40cm apart hoping that by being closer it will stop weeds better. Is that too close? They are not too big and will prob transplant with care.

    Many Thanks

What's 40cm in old money? omg - I'm so unrecontsructed, it has no meaning to me!

The usual spacing between sprouts is 24 inches.

Off to find me tape measure: bear with me!

    (later)

Naturally, the tape measure has disappeared in the great DIY black hole of the garage. But working on MY ruler, I reckon 40cm = 16inches (approx).

That means you have planted them a bit close, which could reduce the cropping potential. I have planted them at spacing of 20inches and had good results. Perhaps you could transplant to a more generous spacing? Keep them very firmly planted and very well watered if you do, especially during this dry spell.

Re the weeds: regular hoeing between the rows will keep the weeds in check, and once the leaves start to spread, the problem is minimal.

Ignore the old books, your 40cm 14" spacing is okay. I plant mine at 12" (30cm) and have done for serveral years after seeing one of the old boys on the site do it that way (as he's always done) and get supurb srouts.
Even my father-in-law who's had a plot for longer than he cares to admit has converted to 12" spacing.
The sprouts all become almost self supporting at this spacing and may just require an outer ring of stakes in a windy loaction.

That's really interesting Dundiggin. I hadn't realised that they would crop as well when planted so close together!

If they are, as you say, self supporting at that distance, all the better!

Many thanks for info. I'll try it myself.

Thanks so much, ill leave them in so.

Quick question how many sprouts should I expect per plant. I have a few more plants to go in and might put them in a little wider see what happens.

    Thanks
