I'm growing garlic for the first time and planted in late October, November - but when do I harvest - they seem different sizes, but some have stems some 2 foot high, varying in thickness - do you just pick as and when you need, or all at the same time, dry and store.
They've shown no sign of flowers which I think is a good thing, but I don't want to leave them too long.
Thanks in advance
I too planted by garlic in october and it seems to be doing well. You should wait till the leaves really start to die back and wilt fully, usually about August. However in this dry spell they will need a lot of watering to allow the bulbs to expand. If not they may be small. I just keping putting a bucket of water over then almost every day just now. You can pick them all at the one time, dry them and store. They will last a long time.
Thanks for the advice lovemyveg - very clear and simple, which for me is ideal been unsure as to whether to water more and how much as the advice re onions seems to be not too much otherwise the rot, but does the same apply to them regarding size against watering?
Thanks again, it is very much appreciated
Yes if they are not swelling much yet and the soil is very dry I'd water them. But do it in the morning as the weather we are having now is also conducive to grey mould.
Thank you for that advice...my first crop of garlic too. Must admit i had stopped wateriing as the tops had died and i thought they might need to dry before i pulled them !!! but now i know better...one bucket of water on it's way in the morning
