A few days ago someone on this list said they wouldn't be growing Red Baron onions again. Now you've got me worried - I put in about a hundred Red Baron sets this year and am wondering if I'm in for a nasty surprise. I know they can be inclined to bolt - is there anything else about them that I should know?

    Hi there

I think it was me smiley - blush

No cause for alarm, just on trawling the forums and talking to neighbouring alloment-holders, they seem to have a rather sporadic success rate.

How are yours doing? I've had about 50% 'disappear' on me, but the ones that have germinated are looking great smiley - erm

Hello, I have commented on what I have found to be a very poor success rate with red baron sets. I have tried them in 3 different locations with the same poor results. The bolt and rot in storage rate I have found very high so I no longer grow them. It doesn't mean that yours are going to go the same way. Best of luck.

Thanks, mimpsy and Paul. I grew mine from sets so perhaps I won't have the same problems as you've had with seed-grown onions. Mine look OK so far, if a bit smaller than other varieties I'm growing. Of course I don't know yet if they'll store well

While we're on the subject, can you recommend any good red onions? Red Baron seems to be the most popular - although that probably just means the seed companies are pushing them
