Hi, how long do early and 2nd early potatoes store for? I have some of those cotton bags they sell at supermarkets now - will they be ok to store them in? I've heard plastic bags are a bad idea.
Many thanks
Best to leave them in the ground until you want to eat them. They don't store too well because they don't have the thick skin of maincrop IMO.
If you do need to keep them for a while, put them in a brown paper or dark fabric bag as they quickly turn green.
Caz
Dig them as you need them as they will not store. Only maincrop are grown for storing.
Thanks guys. I have been digging up just what I need at the mo so I will carry on doing that. Means less digging!
Seriously? Second earlies are not supposed to store? For the last two years I was eating mine until Christmas and this year my Dad gave me some of his which were still fine to eat (a bit sprouted) in March!
At this time of year I wouldn't dig them to store although I also wouldn't expect them to be ready for a while either. I'll probably start digging mine up in late July then dig and store the rest in late August/early September. Unless they get blight/die off before then.
Depends on the variety with second earlies I find.Kestrel stores quite well if left to grow a bit bigger,I've left them in up to 18 weeks by which times the skins have set like maincrop, and they make a lovely baking spud by then as well.
