Being new to this can anyone tell me how I know when a cucumber is ready to harvest, I have a cucumber that is only about 6"long but really chubby the skin still has a few spines on it but most of them have gone any help will be appreciated
How big a cucumber gets depends on which variety it is.
You take them off when they are big enough for you to eat, and you can`t go far wrong, because the more cucumbers you take off, the more you encourage new ones to form.
If it has spines on it it could be a ridge cucumber which you pick small. They are very tasty. Why not try one and see if it tastes good.
thanks, have just tried one for lunch very tasty although the skin is a bit tough might try peeling it next time, the variety is "swing"
Swing is a small cucumber no more than 8 inches. The skin has all the nutrients so its a shame to peel it. Maybe pick it a bit smaller so the skin is not so thick. I looked at my cues today and i was tempted maybe i will pick one tomorrow.
