Hi
I would like to grow gooseberries on my allotment. Rem them from my childhood so tasty. What are the best for growing. My allotment is in North County Dublin, pretty mild climate with sandy soil.
Oh and when should I plant it?

A subject dear to my heart as I am just stewing some on the hob for breakfast fruit with muesli. You can plant now if you buy a containerised plant (in a pot) from the garden centre. Once you have one plant they are unbearably easy to propagate, you literally push a twig into the ground in Nov/Dec and it will root. I like Pax a red desert variety, however the choice is yours, at least look for mildew resistance. Gooseberries can be attacked by a sawfly, so they are best kept pruned to allow birds access to the insects.

Should / how do / when do you prune gooseberries? I have three bushes, red, yellow and green; had them 2 years now and never pruned them. The green one has lots of new growth this year but the red and yellow have none.

As Monty used to say at Berryfields
"Keep'em open, Lad, keep'em open."
Meaning thin out the centre of the bush so that there is no safe haven for insects, also prune away lower branches that trail the ground. Otherwise just shorten long spindly growth back a third, remove any dead or diseased wood. Best done at leaf fall, or anytime over winter.
