My mother has told me that she was listening toa radio program about gardening and th expert said that if you fill a water butt from a tap,and then add some vinegar to it the water becomes more like natural rain water. Has anybody else heard this or have views on it.
Tap water is usually colder than rain water, so by using a storage tank the water warms, then is less of a shock to your plants.
Much depends on where your tap water is supplied from. Water from limestone aquifers is very alkaline and soon firs up the kettle. Some supplies have soft (acidic) water and this is always a concern if you have lead piping in the house. Rain water is slightly acidic, adding vinegar or used tea bags may help, but probably not enough where it is to be used on ericaceous plants.
Invest in a rainwater collection system.
I have a water but at the alotment but was considering adding some vinegar to the water as the butt is invariably filled from the water supply rather than rainwater.
