This year I'm growing three Black Russian tomatoes, one in a 12" pot in the greenhouse, one in a 12" pot on the patio, and one in the veg plot. The best performer so far is the one in the veg plot although the fruit have yet to ripen. Close behind in the one on the patio. The one in the greenhouse? Yes, it has grown, but nowhere as well as the two outdoors and, unlike its brothers, there are few fruit.
Is this common behaviour with Black Russian toms? What's your experience?
First-Black Russian is a superb variety so what ever works for you is the way to go.
This year has been pretty warm so it`s possible the greenhouse one got a bit stressed?
Hi Oldends, This is the second year that I am growing Black Russian Tomato,I always grow them in big pots against southfacing wall and the fruits are getting quite big but is still green. If I compare the Russian fruit with Marmandy fruit size, the former is much bigger.I hope this will help
Hi Oldends, I've been growing Black Russian for about six years. They can be unpredictable, maybe this is because they are an heirloom. I get my seeds from T&M and last year I had plants that produced cherry size fruit and some got big but remained red. As a precaution I always save the seeds from the largest fruit of the healthiest plant every fall. Gave two plants to my neighbour a couple years ago and now through him I have little business every spring selling BR plants.
