My runner beans are doing nothing at the moment. Except, that is, getting 'leathery' looking leaves and just not growing. I know it's been very dry, and I have been watering when I can. I put some manure on the area they are planted in before planting the seedlings out, and just wonder if the muck was a bit too strong for them? One plant even looks like it is dying. Any thoughts from anyone, or advice as to whether anything will save them?

    Hi Farmer Steve,

I appreciate that, but I was wondering if the muck was too fresh, as it were, rather than well-rotted, might it have an effect on the beans?

As has been said before - you cannot give beans too much water.
It has been so dry that the water in the soil has dried out to a considerable depth. Just do a test - water as normal and then run your fingers through the soil like a plough, and I bet that the soil is dry at the bottom of the 'furrow'. You need an awful lot of water to just get down to the roots, and I feel that even if the muck you put on was fresh, the water you've given the beans has not reached the roots, so has not carried the goodness with it, and therefore has not affected the beans.

My bet is lack of water!!!

My top tip for watering any thirsty plant is, plant an empty flower pot along side the plant and fill that a couple of times then you know the water is where it is needed.

They are very greedy I give them a tonic of seaweed solution & 2 teaspoons of Epsom Salts to a gallon of water & give them a foliar feed & water the roots too. They can't have enough water, my Dad's method was to grow them in a trench lined with the Times & filled with well rotted horse manure. I had a pony so we could easily get the manure. This trench feeds & retains the moisture. this however was in a heavy clay alkaline soil, I tried this in Manchester & had to give them Epsom Salts, if you are in a more acid area they will benefit from this method.

Thanks elderman4, willy woodstain and selene, for your thoughts and tips. My dad had mentioned epsom salts too, so might try that. Over the last 3 days, we've had some good downpours after weeks of NO RAIN at all - so am hoping there might be an improvement. Will try the epsom salts and see what happens.

your not alone i've had a nightmare with runners to this year I dug a deep trench, emptied the compost bin into this ( about two wheel barrows) then put two wheelie bins full of leaf mould put the soil back.
None of my seeds came up so I replanted into loo roll tubes and planted these out at about 6 inchs tall they are still about 6 inchs they just don't want to do anything. I've got more Pots growing from the compost !!!
    try again next year.

Hi roonrain, sounds like you did everything right and more! It's very disappointing. At least my peas have done quite well this year. But there's nothing like a plate of steaming runners with a bit of butter and salt 'n' pepper...

I've just found out what's affected my runner beans - herbicide-infected manure. I'm so angry I could spit! That's 40 lovely runner bean plants grown from seed in my greenhouse and then transplanted when they were big enough and lovingly watered.

If anyone else has the possibility of this having happened, take a look at this website:

It says I need to leave the site for 3 years before growing any other crops. It also has photos of infected potato plants and runner beans so you can see what it does to them. Needless to say, the weeds are not affected...

I have heared of Epsom Salts as a correction for Magnesium deficiency but not as a regular additive for runner beans or is it supposed to prevent any problem?. Similar use for tomatoes I think.......smiley - erm

I planted some runner beans I had given to me a few weeks ago. I planted them in pots on the decking and just kept watering them morning and evening. They are now full of red flowers so I am hoping for a nice crop, especially as I have never grown them before.
Yesterday they were full of flying ants as they were everywhere.
