I am going to have a big problem next year in crop rotation,i've only a small plot and trying to rotate brassicas in particular will be nigh impossible.Does anybody have any type of suitable way round it?would topping the beds with acouple of inches of top soil get round it?any thoughts will be appreciated
I would think that replenishing the soil will be ok for them next year I have done that with my small plot every year and have had no problems.
I've only two raised beds for veg and last year just one.
You may find rotation isn't such a problem when planting small scale. Where I grew cabbages and sprouts last year I've grown beans, peas, onions, courettes. Where I grew onions and leeks I now have carrots, parsnips and broccoli.
The new bed is a mixed one with sweet corn taking up most room then parsnips, beetroot, spring onions, radish and herbs.
I've not grown cabbage and sprouts this year but could do next year where the sweet corn is.
If you don't have club root you could consider making a semi permanent brassica bed. Keep it well limed and dig in lots of organic matter. You can even get perennial broccoli.
Look at it this way, crop rotation on anything less than a field is not much use in stopping disease. It might help but it`s the nutritional needs of sucessive crop that is more the concern of gardeners.
So,as said, if you have to overlap brassicas just keep the soil well fed.
I've not heard of perennial brocolli. Is it possible to buy seed & where?
