My grandson has a 2 yr old cherry tree (white naps), and although it has lots of cherries on it, they are very small, and have turned almost black. Last year there was one cherry which was rather bitter to taste. Any ideas why he has not been very successful?

Give it a chance! if it's only 2 it's (or should be)putting its energy into building roots and branches. It's been a difficult year for young trees with the heat and lack of rain

I wonder if cherries are like apples? Apples have a lot of fertilised fruit which all grow. Some drop off naturally, but with my young trees I had to remove about half of the remainder in order to get a few reasonably sized apples without stunting the tree. I don't know if this applies to cherries, but it would make sense if it did.

    Good luck anyway,
    Lottie

It really is still just a baby, as the poster said, it needs to make good strong roots before it gets to fruit. They do need good support in th early days I have found, and plentiful water, even if it is raining.

The first year we had 1 cherry, which we solemnly shared. The next year, a very small bowlful, then the third year a slightly larger bowlful. As the years go on the fruiting will get more bountiful, but like people, cherries - and most other fruits - need time.
