WE have some summer raspberries which we have been picking for a week or 2 but they are very soft and disintegrate when washing. I am not sure why that didnt happen when we grew them in the last garden we had. Does any one have any idea why this wld happen.

I wash everything I pick or buy before eating Cant take chances with my stomach But really do other people eat fruit without washing it. I have asked chefs at cooking lessons if they wash herbs but they just laugh and dont give a straight answer.I guess they dont wash but dont want to be quoted as saying so.

I'll answer that one then smiley - laugh i must admit i've never heard of anyone wanting to wash herbs, infact thats just plain silly. Everhopeful, if you have a sensitive stomach, why would you want to wash your food in water full of chlorline smiley - winkeye The only fruit i'll wash is rhubarb, for obvious reasons, and as for washing raspberries before eating them, well it's as daft as it sounds

I wash everything bought in the shops, well you don't really know where it's been or who else has already handled it.

Must say I haven't washed my rasberries as they too were very mushy when picked or peas they're in pods so they were tested for ripness straight from the plantssmiley - smiley

Pretty much everything else is washed just in case there are any nasties on it, I read some where a guy in Australia nearly died from eating a slug and I'm sure there are things you can catch from animals so unless you have close curcuit TV and watch it 24 - 7 who knows whats been round your plants.

Washing soft fruits ruins them, just pick them over.I find raspberries need picking twice a day when they get going.

I've picked over 5lb raspberries today - and there's loads more that I will have to pick tomorrow.

I don't wash them (why would I? I don't spray them with anything, and unless there's obvious evidence of something like bird stuff on them, there's no point).

I have never washed soft fruit. I am still alive to tell the tale. And, anyway, I just can't resist scoffing a few as I pick!

everhopeful, from what you say your problem isn't the condition of the berries after you wash them but before. Why they should be like that I can't really offer an opinion, so I'm no help there.

However, if it's any comfort, I grow a lot of autumn raspberries each year and always give them a quick rinse even though I never spray them with anything. That's because I have no way of knowing if my allotment neighbours use sprays that can carry in the wind, so it's not as daft as it sounds. Also, if it looks like it's necessary, I put a tiny pinch of salt in the water and let the berries rest a while. The salt drives out any bugs that might be hiding inside and in no way affects the texture or flavour of the fruit.

Thank u all for your comments which seem to be divided as to who does and who does not wash fruit. I have always questioned myself with regards soft fruit as I lose some of the juice in doing so The berries are soft before I pick them tho. So will watch daily and pick smaller batches. As far as herbs are concerned I have stopped washing them because mostly they are being cooked.I guess I am a fusspot who is very cautious. Imagine a rat peeing on the food that cld be very dangerous. There was that girl last year who died after drinking from a can of coke as in the warehouse where they are stored rats run over the tins then she had drunk from the tin. There I go again. I will go out and pick some raspberries now as well as veg for dinner.
