Why do tomatoes split? They are just coming up to full ripeness then a split appears top to bottom. Is it overwatering?
They are tumbling toms in hanging baskets outside on the patio. Could it be all the rain we've had (North West) over the last few days?

I to have the same problem with the same tomatoes and live in the same area as you. I hope someone can help us. I was told by someone that they`d been told it was letting my basket get to dry and then overwatering but I`d never let it get dry so didn`t seem right to me.

    Why do tomatoes split?

There are reasons to do with the dermis and other stuff but basically it`s because the tomoto is ripe and getting larger than it`s skin wants to go.

It`s perfectly normal so just harvest and enjoy.

Some F1 varieties are more prone to splitting than the older types with tougher skin but it`s not usually a problem.

Not so much watering alone, but inconsistent watering.

If a tomato attains a certain size with a given amount of water and the water supply is increased, the skin will split whilst trying to expand to accommodate the extra water.

I agree, it happens..just enjoy them.
