Hi all,
as a novice gardener I would like to ask you experienced folks about harvesting potatoes.
A while ago I planted some Unwins salad potatoes (juliette) but I can't remember the date I planted them.
They have flowered and some have already lost their flowers altogether.
The packet says to harvest 12 to 14 weeks after planting, but as I have mentioned I have no idea how long they have been in the ground.
Can anyone here give me some indication as to when I can dig them up given the above information.
Thanks in advance,
Wokman.
I would dig up one plant and see how its doing! Googled Juliette and end of June suggested.
The rule of thumb and only just a guide is to start looking once the haulm is dying off.
The only way to know for sure is to dig one up and see
Thanks for the replies, looks like I will have to get digging when the rain stops.
I hope they turn out ok as I only had room for 10 plants.
Have a gentle, careful furk in the earth around one or two of your potato plants without digging them up.
Thanks Barny,
that sounds like a good idea, rather than digging up the whole plant. It's still belting down with rain at the moment, so I might have to leave it until tomorrow.
I can hardly wait to taste them though.
Thanks to all for the replies.
I carfully lifted one plant to have a look at the size of the potatoes and they looked perfect.
Her indoors then decided that I should dig up some potatoes for our meal tonight.
The yield wasn't as high as I expected, but the flavour was fantastic.
We had the new potatoes with a griddled pork loin steak and a fresh salad.
I will certainly be growing these potatoes again next year, and I still have enough left in the ground for another couple of meals yet.
Can I still plant other varieties of potatoes at this time of year for a later harvest ?
Yeah, you can for Christmas, but you don't get much of a yield and I never think the flavour is as good as the spring grown.
