Today i've finished picking my last blackcurrants, 28lb from my 2 bushes. I'm wondering if they could take a year off next year, as the prospect of even more blackcurrants next year is not filling me with happy thoughts right now. I've also just realised it will soon be blackberry picking time soon too. I was driving past where i always pick them, and they have set well, and are growing nicely.

I make Jam and chutneys with my extra berries and veg and give them as christmas presents. With nice jars, bottles and gingham lids they look pretty good!

How about making some blackcurrent jam with them. The jams make great gifts and they keep for ages.

My personal view on jams is i hate them. It's a good way of using your fruit when your not very good at cooking. When making chutneys you should use firmer fruits as all you will get from berries etc.. is a mushy mess. It's far better to freeze them and then use them in an array of cooking, rather than just jam

Try chucking some into gravies for duck, pork chicken anything!
Lovely sauce for ice cream etc wirh a bundle of fresh fruit on top.
Buy a bigger freezer or endear yourself to your neighbours!

nooj, i've already got two chest freezers The first one is 105lt. this fits perfectly in the cupboard underneath the stairs. The second one i got last year which is 215lt. That was because alot of the 150lb of fruit that i picked last year went in the freezer. This didn't include a ruck of fallen cooking apples i am given every year. Throw in my home made beef/chicken/fish stocks also in the freezer, blimey! it soon fills up. Thankfully my mum is also a good cook, so she helps out, unfortunately more and more people want to eat junk fast food, than fresh fruit and veg and do not appreciate it, sad actually

I usually freeze mine, and make crumbles and pies with them.

recipe for black currant wine please!
i inherited a bush on my allotment and it looks like they are ready to pick - we don't eat jam and already have turned some of the red currants from another bush we inherited into jelly (well its more of a sauce as it didn't set very well) for adding to casseroles and gravies.

better than wine, put the blackcurrants into a kilner jar with sugar at about 2 to 1 ratio of b/c to sugar, shake, seal and leave in the sun till the end of the summer, then strain, mix with strong vodka, bottle and leave to mature (10 minutes in my case) then place overnight in the freezer, a shot for brekkie give you a good dose of vit c and puts lead in the pencil on a chilly morning.
