I bought some Chantenay carrots earlier this year and all seemed to be going v. well.
But that's not the case!
All of them have curled to about 1.5 inch stumps.
I thought I'd kept them well watered.
Why has this happened- BTW - I had not put any compost on the bed for them.
Thanks
Paul
Just snagging this thread as I had the same with the chantenay carrots I planted last year.
I would think there is a fair chance something has nibbled the roots. Wireworm, free living nematodes. Another thing that could do it is waterlogging when the seedling is young killing the tap root or possibly panning of the soil, is it heavy ground carrots prefer dry sandy soil
Hi farmerSteve,
judging by what you have just said it might be the heavy soil that is my problem.
I will keep an eye on this thread as the flavour of the carrots was lovely, but they were a sorry sight to look at.
The soil on this bed is very fine with many of the stones sieved out - to prevent carrot problems!
Paul
Did you sow seeds or buy ready grown seedlings and transplant those?
Do you just buy and sow the seeds without reading what the soil state should be?
It would really be in your own interest to read up on any seeds/plants etc your thinking of trying?
It will be cheaper than the disasters your having now and you'll get much better results in the end.
Planting carrots in clay is like planting them in concrete.
