They promised us rain (well, the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú website did) but there's not been a sniff of it and now there is none forecast for the Sussex coast for the next five days. Even last week when it did finally rain it was a bit pathetic. I could really do with a night off from coming home from work and spending an age watering everything.

Doncast, it's not a prediction, just a forecast, that is an intelligent guess as to what's going to happen with the weather. If you watch the video then you'll see that the 'promised' rain is actually local showers which, given the prevaiing wind, tend to get fewer and shorter as they progress. The other thing with such showers is they can be very local. One road may get a soaking while the next one remains bone dry. A year or so back I had to drive about 5 miles. As I left home the heavens opened. It literally chucked it down. It continued for half the journey then, like magic, I drove out of the storm and the road was dry. And like you, my garden in Surrey is very, very dry.

Move to Lancashire. We`ve had enough rain over the past few days for everyone and we`re the ones with a hosepipe ban ha ha.

They kept their promise here in South Wales. I bought 12 broccoli plants today at the Abergavenny Farmers Market.
I won't be able to plant them until tomorrow with this weather.
Should be great here for growing rice though smiley - smiley

I live in Edinburgh, fortunately the prolonged dry spell ended up here a couple of weeks ago. Watering a half allotment using a can was a real workout! The weather looks to be set fair for the coming week up here, could be a bumper year smiley - smiley

We have had very little rain in West Sussex but I note that Sussex cricket match against Middlesex the start was delayed plus a break during play at Uxbridge due to rain

I'm in West Sussex too but can't believe it, it has actually started raining albeit quite lightly. I went back into the garden, having watered with a watering can for about an hour, and saw a lovely big rainbow. I thought it was a bit strange then felt the first drop. My daughter and I have been picking the green beans in the (light) rain which was really lovely. It's still raining, well sort of spitting!

gaffelbiter - I'm heading home to Glasgow next weekend for a week. Hope it stays fair for days out with my family though having picnics in the car staring out at the drumming rain would bring back wonderful memories of my childhood. And, I agree, watering with a watering can is good exercise though my back starts to ache after a while.

Sorry to hear about you guys in Sussex, I'm willing the rain to stop or at least redirect it down south. Today was only the 2nd day since the hose pipe ban it hasn't rained in my part of Lancashire. Some days it's been torrential, most days it's been very heavy.

I was able to water the GH without getting wet through todaysmiley - smiley Must make a note to relocate the outside tap.

For those who are suffering the hose pipe ban you can use your hose to fill up water butts and watering cans. Me thinks if this rain continues I'm going to rig up the hose and fill up the watering can inside my GH.

Monsoon conditions here in West Yorkshire, for the past week and a half. Prior to that, my bit of lawn had gone a funny yellow colour, and the ground had cracked - ee, it never rains but it pours, as they say... except in West Sussex

    .... and it's gone again.

Pity we can shift the rain clouds round the country to get the right balance for the gardens (and reservoirs).

doncat, I'm a couple of miles from Eastbourne and we've had absolutely no rain for weeks. The whole site will soon disappear down the cracks. However, please note I shall be camping near Chichester during the first week of August so stand by for a guaranteed monsoon.

I will look forward to that along the coast from you, in sunny Portsmouth!

Very little rain here, but we did have a heavy shower yesterday morning which topped up the water butt a little and the downpipe bucket from the greenhouse roof is full, so the blueberry plants can have some rainwater again!

Very little actually penetrated the ground though as its still difficult to dig up my garlic!

Muddymeldrew, I'm afraid I am particularly hoping for rain the first week of August as I will be in Scotland leaving the care of the garden to my completely non-gardening and frankly rather lazy OH. I really hope nature lends a hand. And, of course, it looks like lots of things are on course to be ripened and ready for picking exactly then.

I live in Haywards Heath and am hoping and praying for rain. What is this myth about St Swithuns Day and 40 days and 40 nights of rain as we had a shower then and nothing since. Runners, Broad and French Beans are growing but not filling out which I am told is due to lack of water but we are permitted to use a hose pipe on the allotmens to fill our water butt but not to water the plants.

I've noticed the same problem with beans not filling out. Unfortunately the same is beginning to happen to my raspberries, usually my prize crop. I'd rather it chucked it down than go camping. I could always just sit in my shed.

Another West Sussex person here & it feels like we've had none for months now!

Every time rain is predicted we seem to just miss it. I can't remember the last drops that fell.

I've driven in & out of it on my way home, but it just seems to keep missing our particular bit!

Watering the pots is a chore & I guess soon I'll even have to consider doing the borders on the south facing side.

Here in Brum we've had a little rain daily over the last week or so. Not enough to keep the outdoor plants (in pots) happy, but enough to make sure any clothes on the washing line don't get dry.smiley - grr

Another rainless day today but with a very drying wind. I've been pulling lots of stuff out today that hasn't coped well with drought and putting it on the compost bin so I can spend my time and energy and water on others that have been fairing better.

No prizes for guessing what it's been like in hose ban country.....it's not stopped raining in this part of Lancashire since about 2.30pm.

My lawn looks like a map of the world with lush green bits and bare brown patches where the moss has been killed. It's going to be knee deep soon if the rain doesn't let off long enough for it to dry out for a cut and to sow grass seed.

The 24 hour Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú forecast for the Shoreham area (closest to me) today said it would rain at 10am and then be sunny again by 1pm. We went out with the dog at 10am and looked heavenwards. I believe that about six drops of rain fell and then it stopped again. I suppose that does technically count as rain.

My rain moniter in the garden has recorded 4mm during the whole of July and I am spending an hour every evening with the watering can. My beans are doing well but only because I give them an entire watering can every day.

koala girl, that would explain the teeny bit of dampness on the ground when I got up this morning after a bit of a lie-in. Not quite the soaking we're needing. I have to say though I feel fitter and ever so slightly trimmer for all the hand watering.

We were forcast rain yet again today. I was taking no chances as it's rained nearly everyday for the past 2 weeks here and purchased a gazibo for a family bar-b-cue, smiley - biggrin For fear of sounding like Victor Milldue 'I don't believe it'...no prizes for guessing...it hasn't rained all day.
