What are the best tips people can give me for caring for chillies?
I have a couple of chilli plants with a few white flowers, starting to die off.
Are chillies like tomato plants in that you strip back the lower portion of leaves etc...
Just let them get on with it. Theres no need to strip leaves off,the flowers are where your chillies will form and keep them well watered although its said that if you treat them a bit mean and let them dry out a touch it intensifies the heat and flavour of your crop.
Are you suggesting I should treat them mean to keep them keen Longbody!
I have a different problem. My chillie plants are not growing. They look healthy but are very small and no sign of flowers yet. Is there anything I can give them to boost growth
Contrary to the textbook,I feed youngish chilli peppers with a weaker & higher nitrogen feed (say 7-7-7 )than you would give your Toms. That way you'll get a lovely big plant. I can get Apache up to about 30 inches, and it makes such a beautiful and highly decorative plant. The first few flowers/fruits might drop off but no matter there will be many more. Use a weak tom. feed later on to ripen off.Just keep your fingers away from your eyes.
I have harvested a few chillies this week which are pretty hot! However I have noticed that some of the flower stems are falling off. What would cause this? The chillies are growing in a polytunnel get watered daily and have not been pinched out. I also feed them once a week. I have also seen insects on them - I know them as cleggs - and there are little holes in the leaves. Any advice anyone?
The worst enemies of my chilli plants has always been the wind and aphids. Didn't have to grow hot peppers this year but my sweet peppers are staked, protected from the wind, and I check for insects every couple days.
I grow fantastic chillies every year. They hate to be over watered. I feed them when I feed my tomatoes.
Thanks Barny for that I think I will try that feed
