I have a nast fat catepillar on my brassicas.
Looking it up I matched it with cabbage moth, it makes sense. When googling I found thst it was a 'serious pest'. Does anyone know how to get rid of it (apart from checking each plant- tehy are planted rather close together).
This is the link, sorry I can't find the how to thread, cound someone ping it please.
The top right photo is the one that looks most like mine.
1.Squish, the eggs and catapillars.
2.Grow them under fleece/fine netting.
3.Use a bio control such as Nemasys Grow your own
They overwinter in the ground, I have net over...
I do try to squash the eggs but I have difficulty getting to all of the cabbages, although I did plant them according to the recommended spacing.
cabbage white butterflies usually overwinter as chryssalis hanging on stone walls
If you fleece or net it will normally control them but they are very cunning at getting in if the net is not perfect they can also lay eggs through a net if the net touches the leaves
It's not cabbage white farmerSteve, I can recognise those relatively small caterpilars, and anyway my husband made a butterfly-proof cage, (well it's held up so far!)
These are large, fat, brownish, slightly transparent looking; a thoroughly nast piece of work.
I also have a nasty looking caterpiller - it's black and yellow stripes like a wasp. Anyone recognise it from that description?
Hi Ian W,
Sounds like cinnabar moth, it is a beautiful small red black moth and the catterpillars are very striking black and yellow stripes. They eat ragwort, and I believe they were introduced to New Zealand to cope with the ragwort there.
I don't think they do any harm to other plants, but I'd like to know if they do.
