dead plum

    hi i have a victoria plum tree and a opal plum tree in my front garden. my soil is sandy and well drained.
    the problem is all the leaves have gone brown and ? the victoria plum tree is dead and the opal never flowers!
    any ideas as to either of my trees problems?

    I wonder whether you have tried to prune the tree during the winter. If you did, then it is quite probable that it has died of silver leaf.

    Plum trees are pruned in the summer, before St Swithen's day. Same goes for all stoned fruit trees like apricot, damson, peach etc.

    Wit regard the opal never flowering. You do not say how old the tree is. If it is a new tree, it is possible that it needs to 'settle in' before it blossoms.

    To encourage it into blossom I would suggest that you sprinkle sulphate of potash around the root area in January and water it in. Just sprinkle, not inches thick!
