I have a couple of strawberry plants in a large container with a blueberry plant. They're starting to send out their runners, hanging over the edge the container.

Any suggestions whats best to do next as they've no soil to root into?

Depends what you want to do with them. I'm suprised they've grow with a blueberry plant, has your blueberry plant produced any fruit!

If you want new strawberry plants for next year, depending on the variety you have, mine have now stopped producing fruit. Let the runners grow, some will mature with roots showing and whilst attached to the mother plant they will get all the nutients they need to continue growing.

In tall containers you may not be able to train them into soil to take root.

Two options would be, when the roots begin to show cut the plant off from the mother plant and either put in water with just the roots submerged, a glass is ideal for this, and allow the roots to grow then pot on or plant them straight into soilwhen you cut them off from the mother plant. Strawberries are very hardy.

Alternatively if you don't want any extra plants just cut off the runnerssmiley - smiley

    Thanks for the detailed info.

Is it not a good idea to have them in with the blueberry? smiley - yikes

They havn't fruited as of yet, but I hadn't expected them too (maybe even until next year) I bought it as an immature plant from a well known multi-national diy/garden store that will remain un-named! smiley - biggrin

It seems to be doing alright as far a new foliage etc goes.

The strawberry produce a fruit v.early after planting in the container...but that rotted after a night out even heavy rain!!...Gutted!!

    Again, thanks for the advice.

You wait until the runners are growing like a shoot with leaves then get a small pot with soil in and put the root onto or just under the soil. In a few days it will have started to take one established you can cut from the main plant.

You need to wait until the runner produces a shoot with leaves and a slight root part to it, the get a small pot with soil in and put the sprouting runner into it just under the soil, in about a week it will have started to take . Once it's produces a few leaves and looks established you can then cut from the main plant. Mine has been doing this for about 3 weeks now throwing off runners. We have had some nice sweet strawberries off this year

I didn`t realise you had to keep them on the runner when you planted them in soil so detached them but they seem to be doing ok. I had a few nice fruit off 6 plants this year but now have another 6 for next year and also have more runners coming.

Hi I did it like that because they were still getting nutrients off the mother plant until they got established I had been giving the odd feed with fruit food too

I am going to do the right way when the other runners begin to root and it will be interesting to see what happens and if ther`s a difference in how the plants do.
