I recently bought Alys Fowlers book the thrifty gardener and she says how to make leaf mould as an additive to potting compost.
Would this mould be good to use as a mulch to keeps weeds down and add moisture?
Thanks
Leaf mould, used in a thick enough layer, would make a good mulch. A mulch keeps the soil's 'status quo'. It will not add moisture but it will stop evaporation of the moisture that is already present. If you are going to mulch, do it after a good downpour and never mulch soil that is bone dry, unless that is the environment that you want to keep.
Happy mulching
Thanks
I use leaves around our fruit trees as some are new for this year I have been watering so all I do is pull the leaves to one side and water into the hole other wise the leaves soak up the water and trap it.
