I am in the process of re-ordering my recently acquired half plot on an allotment. I have been told by the secretary that I can have a couple of fruit trees on there as long as
they are compact. At home I already have a cherry tree and my kind neighbours allow me to help myself to the glut of apples from their tree.

I would like some ideas on the best type if 'compact' trees to grow. Don't have any particular fruit favourites but would probably like some type of plum tree.

    Cheers - Nick

You could try a Minarette Victoria Plum tree - mine is doing really well in a pot and won't take up much space... smiley - smiley

Seems to me it is much easier to find dwarf and 'patio' sized fruit trees at garden centres/nurseries these days than anything else. I had a small group of 8 standard sized apple trees planted, I think, in the 1930s or 40s some have died out in recent years and I would have liked to replace them with standard size traditional varieties even if I'm not around to see them in their prime. No one seems to want them/supply them these days, and admittedly, a 25-30' tree is not easy to manage even when you are lucky enough to have the space.

I have a dwarf James Grieve apple tree. It produces lots of apples that are not available in the shops. I also have a dwarf Stella cherry tree. It also gives a good crop of lovely dark sweet cherries. Both cost me £7.99 from the old woolworths. You could also go for fruit bushes as there are plenty of reasonable sized bushes that give good crops. Most of mine i bought in Lidl for 1.99 and they have all produced good crops.

We got some apple & pear trees from Lidls in Feb last year, £3.99 each. They were planted on an oblique cordon & have come on a treat. The pears are taking longer to establish than the apples but that is normal. I think they also have them in Autumn too. Morrison's also do fruit trees at £5.00 again late Winter & Autumn.
