I grow summer raspberries Glen Ample on my allotment. This year I had an excellent crop, but during the secondhalf of picking I noticed quite of the raspberries were a strange shape. The best way to describe them is heart-shaped, or flattened. When I looked more closely I could see that each fruit had grown on a single stem, but the hull inside the fruit had forked in two, and a part-raspberry had then grown around each hull, merging together to make one strange shaped fruit. It didnt affect all the fruit, and on a single stem there were some normal raspberries and some with this deformation. They still tasted good, though were a bit more prone to fall apart when picked.
I am just curious really - has anyone else seen this? And why would it happen?
Yes, I have noticed a few, only on Glen Ample. It is probably something to do with the breeding of this variety and nothing to worry about.
