I've grown peas for the first time this year and now that they are coming to the end I was unsure what to do with the plants. I think I've read on here that the roots should be left in the ground, but I can't find the thread on it. Do I cut the tops off or can I dig the whole plant into the soil to rot over the winter. Would this be beneficial?
I cut em at ground level, leaving the roots in and the tops go on the compost heap.
would they re grow back next year if u do that?
No, peas do not grow back from their old roots, you must sow new ones each year. The reason for leaving the roots in the ground is so that they can return all the nutrients to the soil as they rot, before the soil gets used again. If you find it a nuisance to leave them in, and you want to use the ground again, pull them up and put them on the compost heap, they will rot down there nicely and put much of the nutrients back that wasy.
