Hi everyone. I posted a message on the Garden clinic but then read down the list and someone suggested putting it here as well. I have just returned from holiday and my tomatoes in the greenhouse are starting to shrivel before they ripen. It is mostly affecting the top trusses. Someone has been watering for me, but I wonder if they haven't had enough water, or, perish, the thought, whether they may have some disease. Can I do anything to stop the problem spreading, and should I remove the tomatoes which have started to shrivel?

Hi, Yours does seem to be an unusual problem. If it was a disease I would think it would affect the whole plant. Irregular watering can cause several problems as can overwatering. Extremes of temperature -hot days, cold nights - could also be a cause. The shrivelled fruit will probably not recover so it may be as well to remove them.

Looks like you need to get someone more reliable to water for you next time you go away. Keep up regular watering now you are back and see what happens.

    Hi,
can i ask "do you have any form of shading from the sun's rays in your greenhouse such as netting or the sun shade thats painted onto the glass?

It could be your tome are getting scorched by the sun via the green house glass or that your plants are to high up and to near the top part of the green house?
Or that the watering time is to near the full sun time and the wet leaves are again not dry enough "hence" scorching.

Try a root water plus a very light early morn mist spray on the leaves.

Thanks for your reply punpun. You have highlighted several possible problems. Yes, the tomatoes are right up to the greenhouse roof, and I have not got any shading. However, I don't think it was very hot last week. But, watering at the wrong time might be very possible as it was my elderly father who was doing it for me (bless him!). No more of the tomatoes are shrivelling, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
