can someone please explain why my onions are small for the 2nd year in a row? The taste is fab but the bulb is just not of a good cooking size, they were planted from onion sets not shallots of that I'm certain. Thanks.

probably lack of watering as much as anything
lack of fertility does not help either

    Good point.
Have they had adequate water in the early and main period of growth and swelling?
    Assuming that 3 tips-

1.All veg. respond well to growing in a raised bed but onions (and leeks) really do grow particularly well in a raised bed.

2.They also respond particularly well to artificials (cheap old N Growmore 7-7-7, is good enough at the rec. rate)As well as the NKP they need the sulphur as well.

    3. A relatively modern thing (for me at any rate0
is to use hort. fleece. This is wonderful stuff-keeps fly off, lets rain in and speeds up growth a lot and the raised bed makes it easier to fix.

Try this lot and you will be guaranteed big onions.
Try some from seed for really big ones but you must start early in the year from seed.
    Cheers and BOL!
