Someone gave me 2 aubergine seedlings some months ago and and I now have several fruits, a couple of which are fairly large although not as big as the supermarket ones, and a lovely shiny deep purple. Are they ready to eat? What should I look for before taking them from the plant? I would hate to pick them too early so I can't use them but neither do I want to leave them too long so they go past their sell by date!

YES!!-you might find they are heavier for their size than supermarket stuff, the flesh denser.
Enjoy!!
And forget the salting stuff-no need for that with a home grown .

Our first homegrown aubergine was eaten on Monday. It was as you say much more dense than the supermarket version. The flesh was creamy white and firm and the flavour was fabulous. A revelation!!
