Most of the time its the way you water them...if you water them to much in one go or if you miss a day here and there...I try to water at the same time everday and try to water the same to each plant each timeI do.

I agree 100% with Big Dave,
But you've not said if they are greenhouse grown or outside toms,

Im lucky enough to have both and the ones in the green house are prone to dry out quick and so need extra attention, but if for some reason ive allowed the compost to dry (even just once ) i'll see cracks appear, So it's a safe bet to say as big Dave has said it's the watering time table you need to look at.

PS Have you tried the russian black toms?
    (well worth a go)

thank you BigDave and punpun, i have changed the watering a bit because we were not getting a lot of sun here in the NE so i was watering every other day as the compost seemed quite damp, they are in a small greenhouse,as for the russian toms i will give them a go next year, once again thank you both kind regards chris

I agree about the watering regime but should add the some varieties are more prone to splitting than others.

And Black Russian are superb, the flavour is quite complex though so not everyone likes them.

Some of my customers are now completely converted to them but a few just couldn`t get on with them-taste is a very personal thing.

And they come true from saved seed

I can confirm that some varieties are better than others. I'm growing a trial cherry tomato from D T Brown alongside my other tomatoes and they split very easily, although some are fine until picked and then split when you remove the stalk to eat them. But they're also the only ones to have split on the vine even though they get exactly the same treatment as the others.
