    Hi,

I have offered to supply a friends daughters wedding with sunflowers. What a responsibility, I have grown them in abundance before but they can look scraggy quite soon after the flowers open, this would not look good on the tables at reception nor in the church. Any offers of knowlegde, advise, help, or tips to have perfect blooms for the 15th July would be gratefully received. Their plan is to have the smaller mixed variety on the tables and the large yellow blooms by the entrances.
    Happy gardening

You`ve grown them, Sunflower, so you obviously know about them.
All I can think to say is they take about 100 days from seed germination to flowering, so you`ll have to count the days back from the 15th July to find the sowing time.
To make sure the seeds sprout they have to be set in the warmth. As it will be about the beginning of April when you sow them, that means indoors.
The plants need full sun, all day if possible.
Once the flowers are open, watering helps to keep the flowers looking nice.
Of course, gardening is not an exact science, and whether or not the sunflowers bloom on exactly the right day might be down to the weather.
I think a prayer would be in order, too.
    Good luck! smiley - biggrin

    Thank you for your tips.
100 day guide sounds like something to work from.

Everything I have grown in the past has been hit and miss. wild sunflowers appeared in the veg patch this year?!

happy gardening and thank you again, I shall add it to my prayer list.

Sunflower, I did similar in 1995 for July 23rd... a promise made just before closing time after a joyful celebratory evening in the pub!
Luckily I've loads of room so sowed two batches of seed three weeks apart starting early April with half Atlantic Giant in the first batch - it worked out fine largely helped because if you pinch out the top bud of AtlanticG it rapidly grows half a dozen aux. good sized flowers from the upper leaf joints.

Good for you, and best of luck!

I'd be tempted to buy extra seeds and give them with instructions re the dates etc to as many of your gardening friends as you can and then you'll have some insurance in case anything happens to yours.
