I have tried to reply to your query about which type of apple would suit your area, but for some reason the reply system would not work.
I would suggest that you contact your nearest nursery and seek their advice. Being near you, they should be in the best position to know your climatic conditions and which tree would be the best buy.
If there is not one near you, then check the internet for suppliers. There is an excellent one on the Isle of Wight that I have always found to be helpful with advice.
Good Luck!
Thanks for that. Ironically, I used to live near Pompey, but now I'm in N.E. Scotland - a tad different from IOW!
I'm gradually piecing together info and hopefully I'll make the right choice.

I don't know whether it is a problem with your computer, or the way that you have submitted your posts Capt, but I cannot comment on it, only on mine.
Deacon is the name to look for!
If you are in NE Scotland, have a look at the Beechgrove garden (Aberdeen) fact sheets or have a word with local nurseries.
How odd...I think there is a bug in your username Captain Lightning. It appears you don't exist...how bizarre.
I live in Udny and this year have just planted a 45 tree orchard with a further 30 ordered for planting in the winter.
My parents (in Ellon/Mintlaw respectively) have a Discovery tree which does very well ripening up with us but isn't really a keeper (but dries/freezes well) and the obvious Bramley which never ripens fully because we're too far North but keeps excellently until March/april.
One I love that I have discovered is a "Bloody ploughman" it had a good fokelore story and the apple (yes, it's the first year and I only got one!) was delicious! Unfortunately I can't recommend whether or not it keeps...it didn't last long enough!
Curious, when I tried to look, I couldn't find anything so I had a look at my settings and then tried again - there I was!
Thanks for the thoughts on the apples.. I'm getting an idea for what I want, but my remaining concern is the wind that we get here.
