I want to plant some spring cabbage what is the Ph of the soil suttable for cabbages?
Just plant the seeds in pots (old plastic coffee cups with a small hole in the base) in John Innes no 1. Transplanting when required with minimal root disturbance. Cheers, Tony.
You need alkaline soil Royn but any kind of soil will do, just add a little lime to make the PH higher. I have acidic soil, added lime and my brussels and savoy cabbages are growing just fine.
Hi royn45. Good idea to plant some spring cabbages! If you live on chalky soil (ph 7 or above,) you shouldn't have any problems when you plant out the seedlings grown in little pots as suggested. If your soil is neutral to acid (ph 6.8 or less,) then all brassicas (cabbage family) will benefit from a generous handful of garden lime dug into the area where you make the planting hole. This helps protect them from clubroot fungus, which is a real nasty and lingers in the soil for years once it's there. It's wise to firm the soil well once you've planted, as your spring cabbages have to stand through autumn and winter winds.
Good luck. Pinxit
Thanks folks i will now go forward full of confidence cheers.
