i just come back from the allotment time the weekend and lots of my toms have gone red but they have split, can anyone tell me why this has happened and if i could of provented it.
I bet it's happened to a lot of people this week!
It's caused by a sudden change in soil water content, you can avoid it by regular watering in normal circumstances.....but this downpour ?
thank richard ive been watering daily except if its rained in the day time, gutted about it but what can you do.

Still pick the split toms and make them into sauce or soup. Just cut the split section out. It has happened to lots of crops this year.

Quite a few of my cherry tomatoes have split. If I leave the under-ripe ones to ripen fully they get infections and go mouldy ... I've been picking all split tomatoes and freezing them for cooking with in the winter. I've so many perfect ripe ones to eat fresh that the rejects have to go for the pot!
Yes, it's happened to me too (my tomatoes, that is - my skin has not burst yet!). Regular watering is supposed to avoid this, but Mother Nature has disregarded this advice - having provided minimal water in the early months of the season, she has now flooded the crops, and the tomato skins have burst with the pressure of all this extra fluid.
All you can do is pick and use them as soon as possible after they've split. You can probably slice off and edible piece of each one, or chop them all up to make sauces, soups and chutneys. Watch our for slugs and snails, which will take advantage of the punctured skins and start to feast on the tomato flesh.
