Can anyone recommend a strong flavoured galic variety. We grew some last season and although they grew well the flavour was very mild.
many thanks in advance
Jo
Garlic "Cristo" did very well for me this year. It's quite strongly flavoured and produced nice even bulbs, which dried quickly with no rot and are now plaited and hanging up in the kitchen. I might plant some of the cloves for next year and see if they manage to grow large enough, rather than always buying new stock.
Hicklingj, they usually become a bit stronger as they dry out, but it does depend on the variety. If planting some of the cloves for next year, only choose cloves from the outside; they are the biggest anyway.

I concur, pinxit. Cristo has been exceptionally good, and I'll definitely be growing it again this year.

When is the right time to plant garlic? I'd like to try planting some this year.

Sometime in the next month is O.K. for planting garlic. Plant them deeper than onions though....Cheers, Tony.
I went to the Garlic Festival on the Isle of Wight this year and came back with 3 huge bulbs from the garlic farm for planting. Planting instructions vary slightly for the bulbs as they are different varieties but all of them can be planted in December. I suggest you have a quick look at www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk for all things garlic!
How long does it take to germinate garlic? Planted some a couple of weeks ago but haven't seen anything above ground. The onions I planted at the same time are already producing shoots. I planted Christo as it got good feedback here.

They tend to make roots first KJ and then shoot later.
I planted some out at the beginning of October and the shoots are just coming through now.
If nothing appears in a week or two and you are worried you can very carefully prize away the soil with your fingers and see if there are roots forming,
I too planted onions and garlic a couple of weeks ago with the same results. Hopefully we shall see results from the garlic before too long!
Thanks for the info. I hope you are right and that they haven't croaked.
