Hi can any one tell me if you can plant Cauli Brocilli and Sprouts during the winter well starting seeds off now?
Your a smidge late, but if you can supply some bottom heat and extra light to get the seedlings to catch up, give it a go. Cheers, Tony.
Hi Wendy and Tony,
I think Tony was being very optimistic when he said you are a "smidge" late. I wouldn't bother with either the broccoli or the sprouts, I suspect they wouldn't produce anything worthwhile. I'm not sure whether there are any overwintering varieties of caulis which you might try but I doubt it.
What you could try is chinese cabbages, pak choi and pet tsai(the heading variety which is super for boiling, steaming and cole slaw). Also you might get away with a sowing of "cut and come again" salad leaves and radishes perhaps.
Something else worth considering might be corn salad.
The great thing about gardening is that there is always next year,....and maybe other boarders may contradict me completely!
Good luck!
Probably your best bet is spring cabbage. They can be planted out up to November and should be ready by late April early May, dependant on your location. When cutting, leave the bottom four leaves on the stalk and you will find four mini-cabbages grow out of the old stalk. They are delicious. You may need to protect from pigeons and slugs.
hi, you can plant peas /broad beans and garlic now for an earlier crop next year
