Will rhubarb grow in shade or does it need plenty of sun?? I am rearranging things and want to make sure I make the right decision before I do any moving.
Hi Sue. My rhubarb grows well in semi shade (in this case that's about 2 hours sunshine a day.) It is next to a mature mixed hedge but that doesn't seem to worry it - I wondered initially if the hedge might rob it of nutrients or water, but it seems fine. Before planting I dug in plenty of garden compost and a little pelleted chicken manure. (I do live in quite a wet area, west Cornwall.) Two plants produce more stalks than two of us need!
One of my crowns grows amongst the roots of a 5ft high hedge in semi shade, two more grow equally well with full sun from midday.
