Hi everyone
This may seem a silly question, but I am on my own so find it difficult to use a whole cabbage even if I keep it in the fridge. I wondered whether, if I cut off part of the cabbage & leave the rest in the ground, would the cabbage die off? A bit like the cut & come again lettuce.

I think the open edge would go mouldy but you can cut this off

I grow minicole cabbages. They can be cut quite small and last a long time in the ground and in the fridge if you cover the cut edge with cling film.
If you have a freezer? why not use what you want of your huge cabbage and then use the rest after it's been liqiudized (excuse spelling if wrong)
and made into a soup ready for use on those cold winter days?
I bought an old french cook book a few weeks ago and the cook said most people chuck the very best part of the cabbage away ie the stork.
He went on to say that the stork has all the good stuff in it and if boiled it makes the best stock ever tasted.
One to be tried.
Can't remember where I have seen this (it may have been here!) and it won't help you much with a large cabbage, but I remember reading if you cut off a cabbage but leave the stalk, then cut a cross in the stalk you then get smaller cabbages like spring greens off the stalk.
Has anyone tried this, and know if it works?
Thankyou everyone for your helpful replies & yes if you cut a cross into the stalk after cutting it will sprout. I shall try out the various ideas.
