i used to eat the seeds of red poppies when a kid. poppy seeds can make you fail a morphine and codeine drug test.

poppy head tea was popular in the uk before ww2.

    lots on this subject.

some reckon european fairytales come from the imaginations of people during long winters cooped up in shacks and eating old rye bread and poppy cake. smiley - smiley

That would be from mould on the rye bread jaunty, not the poppy seed. The mould produced a substance close to LSD, but often led to permanent madness or death.

The poppy seeds you can eat are indeed those from the species papaver somniferum (not the hybrids), NOT those from red field poppies or oriental poppies.

Only very minor traces of opiates in the ripe seeds, if you are a professional athlete etc, to be avoided re doping tests, but otherwise no potential drug-wise

it is not technically a mould producing LSD but ergot which was used medicanally (well sort of as it induces abortion and will poison if eaten enough of)
Any of the cereals can produce ergot if conditions are right as do the ryegrasses.if the grain or flour is stored damp it may ferment and under these conditions LSD can be produced. It only needs a very small trace to induce hallucinations and it is believed that in the distant past during times of famine when such grain may have had to be eaten whole viallages could go mad
As for eating poppy seeds and its effects I have no clue except to say my local baker is always smiling smiley - smiley

Thank you farmer Steve. I was being lazy and just couldn't remember the name, ergot as you say.

It is the fruiting body of the fungus Claviceps purpurea, not a mould - memory banks now refreshed! smiley - smiley
