In England i would buy John Innes for germinating seeds, cant seem to find similar in france, anyone out there know the answer thanks
Try asking for 'terreau de sémence', my wife is out at the moment, but I believe that is correct.

Thanks for that,I will get the language together eventually
No problem Julie, my pleasure, my wife is French and we are keen gardeners/allotmenteers; please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Hi all,
Just to add a little to the vocab. Seed compost, it's also usually sold as compost for cuttings as germinator says is "terreau de semences et de bouturage". There's also "terreau universel" which is general purpose but perhaps too coarse for small seeds and cuttings and then there's "terreau, terre de fougère" which is ericaceous compost.
There are lots of others too and there must be one for bulbs but I just use "terreau universel".
Have you ever come across "growbags " in France? I don't think I ever have but I don't pay enough attention!
Good luck L
Hello Logissimo, thanks for the details/clarification, you can see where our place is if you look at the 'Victoria plum' thread on the Garden Clinic board. (Sorry I cannot link.)

Logissimo,
I believe you were going to 'train potatoes on wire' and give us an update on them. How did they go?
Hi Germinator, thanks for the tip, I'll follow up Victoria plums!
And Margaretstar, I can see why you are a star! I really didn't think anyone would mention my trained potatoes again. But I harvested them last Saturday, (they just wouldn't die!) and I have some impressive results to report along with photos. The haulm of the trained ones (desiree) was over 5ft tall and yielded about 5.3kgs per metre of row.
I promise to post very soon but I still have another row to harvest, maybe I'll go and do it straight away. So stand by for the results in the next couple of days.
