I've just heard about a carrot called 'Nantes Fruhbund' which is sown in autumn for spring.
WOW!! I'll be getting some of those. It'll miss the carrot root fly too cause any eggs will already have been laid.
Could I grow it in a polytunnel over winter do you think, or perhaps a greenhouse? or will this be too hot?
Any comments would be great.
Lottie
I got some free seeds of these and grew half of them in the normal way, sowing in spring. I've been digging them up for a while now and they are really good carrots- tasty, large and less fly damage than I usually get.
I sowed the other half of the packet last week.
Since it did so well for me over Summer, I guess it'd be fine in a greenhouse or polytunnel over winter in terms of temperature. I might be a bit worried about light levels perhaps? It might be better just in open ground.

I sowed Early Nantes in the cooler of my two green houses in mid August. They up and going but I don't known how big they will get before the sun disappears for the winter. This is a bit of an experiment I will let you know what happens.

I have to join in because I'm growing them too. I sowed my seed on 19th sept. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they do.
I have mine in a plastic container (so it won't crack if we have frost) and will have them sitting up at the allotment. If we get a bad frost I can to and cover them in fleece as I don't live far from my allotment.
We can all compare notes and hopefully we'll all get some nice spring carrots.
We planted some in a polytunnel late autumn last year & they were a fantastic success. The flavour was fantastic

Mine have germinated, it's great to see those little spikes poking through. Anyone else have theirs germinated yet?
No! Well, maybe one? But I'm getting increasingly worried.
Although I had this fretting-about-things-coming-up worry two years in a row with garlic and only realised how silly I was being when I found the previous year's thread in which I was fretting about my garlic taking too long to come up!
I planted mine in my new polytunnel, that was only about a fortnight ago so I'm not expecting tehm for a little while yet, although that doesn't stop me looking!
IS growing carrotos in a polytunnel OK? are they going to thrive, or should I have put them in hte greenhouse, or coldframe? Do they need a lot of light?
The greenhouse is still full of tomatoes, if I take them out and sowed the carrots today do you think I would get a crop?
We grew some in a polytunnel last winter and they were fine - did very well
I sowed mine on 25th September and lots of little seedlings have come through. I'm growing mine in one of my recycling boxes. I grew carrots in the same container earlier in the year and they did really well.
Where do you get Fruhbund from, sound great to me. I'm in Ireland.

The ones I have came from T&M online.
I got mine from the local Wyevale (or whatever they call themselves now). I am very pleased to have picked up that tip. What a great message board this is
