its been such a quick summer its flown by. my first year of growing vegetables have been great. what can we put in now and grow over winter? we have sprouts in and parsnips. is there anything else we can put in over the winter? i want to use my plot as much as i can. it helps break up our rubbish soil. many thanks.
I am getting my allotment in October and plan to plant some garlic and onions ( I think I am right doing this now something to do with them needing the cold ).
Like you I would be interested to know if there is anything else I could plant.

You might be able to find some kale seedlings in a garden centre - mine went in a couple of weeks ago as they are winter hardy. If you have any protection (plastic cloche etc) then its not too late for chinese cabbage, rocket, spicy greens and lambs lettuce. But I suppose if you are far north the nighte might be getting a bit too cold for much else. If its to break up the soil then a green manure would be a good idea.
You can sow broad beans ( variety aquadulce claudia) in a few weeks time. they will give you an early crop next spring and also act as green manure as they fix nitrogen with their roots
Still sowing spinach, chard and rocket for baby leaves. Oriental leaves too. Fenugreek for a green manure to overwinter and keep weeds down. Will be putting in overwintering onions and garlic soon, and Jerusalem artichokes Oct/Nov. Now is the time to plant fruit bushes and trees, hedging, strawberries, rhubarb. You could try a late sowing of kale, cabbage and quick turnip eg "Snowball".
