has anyone ever grown rhubarb from seed? I was tempted at Wyvale yesterday where they were selling their seeds off at 50p a packet. So I wondered how successful I might be. I suppose the plants you buy must come from a little seed in the first place. I don;t expect to be pulling this time next year but I can be patient. I bought loads of packets of flowers and veg and can't wait for the spring to get them going!

Yes I have grown rhubarb from both bought seed and from the seed from another root that I allowed to seed. The only thing to be careful of is to make sure that you mark where you plant the seed as from memory they took quite a time to germinate and it would be easy to weed them out!

Thanks for that advice, I'll start it in a big pot.
I have a couple of friends who grew from seed & they just started it off in a seed tray. Cropped well in the second year.

That sounds very encouraging, thanks!
rhubarb plants you buy would notrmally come from dididing up older plants
growing from seed has advantages and disadvantages. Better chance of being disease free but longer time before cropping and no guaranttee that the plant will be as good a cfdropper as the parent.
I would have thought though cropping would be more affected by the soil quality.

I grew rhubarb from seed this year and had no problems.
I started the seed off in small pots and when the roots had filled the pots moved them to bigger ones.
I kept them outside and they are now large plants and were planted out 2 weeks ago.
I haven't pulled any and will cover the crown over winter after they die down.
