Ahhh....... but how to stop them!!!!

I recently moved and never had this problem with my other veg plot. It was 200ft long and backed onto farmland - no problem.
This new one is 50ft long and is bordered by wooden fences that have gravel boards that are into the ground on all sides and in a built up area - result, eaten beetroots!!!!!

I just don't get how they are being eaten!!!

Mine get nibbled in this way too. I often see wood mice and bank voles scooting about in the garden, and I think they are the culprits. My neighbour happens to have two chunky holly trees which (like a lot of evergreens) drop their leaves in spring and they fall onto my patch. I collect up a sack of dry ones and spread them around beetroots, peas and other things which get eaten. It does appear to help. Well, if I were a small furry rodent, I would go somewhere else rather than get my nose prickled! If you have gorse in your area, that's another effective deterrent, but chop it up a bit first.

Definitely mice, I had all my beetroots eaten this year and couldn't understand why, as it had never happened before.

I was growing chioggia, and apparently they are sweeties for mice.

I put down some of those boxes with bait in them along the row that birds can't get into, and it stopped the problem just in time for me to get the last couple of dozen beetroots.

They also ate half my strawberry crop, some carrot shoulders and the cherry tomatoes in the greenhouse. I thought it was my son's rabbit!
