i have one going pretty well. it has about 7 fruits on it at varying stages. given the time of year i just wonder if i should remove a few of the smaller fruits to enable the others to get to a decent cooking size ? the frosts cant be too far away and the growing season is coming to an end. ive had one off it but would ideally like at least a couple more if possible.

As I have written on the other thread, I have never succeeded with 'Butternut'; I don't know what your climate is like, but I suppose the usual pumpkin rules apply, so would remove the smaller ones.
ok thank you - ive just seen the other thread !

But you can eat the small ones! Just use them like courgettes but peel the skin off as it is too tough. They are delicious in a stir fry with garlic!
Don't throw them away, such a waste!

If you intend to store the squashes, ensure you cut the 'vine' quite long as rot can sometimes start in the vine and enter the squash while in storage. Cheers, Tony.
I've done quite well with butternuts, for the first year ever! Thanks for those bits of advice, margaretstar & Tony.
i am in the london area and i will give mine a good covering with straw and fleece.
i also have small butternut on the vine and i am confident by giving good cover they will grow on.
i have already picked three very large fruit,i had good success last year too.
Dont peel them, for when i bake them the skins taste like the skin of a potato.
