    Congratulations!

My advice would be to contain your enthusiasm and don't try to do everything all in one day, or try to grow everything in the seed catalogue. smiley - winkeye

    My advice would be:

    1. Talk to as many people on the site as possible and find out what they're growing and how. It's the best way to learn and the majority of allotmenteers love to go on (and on!) about their crops!

    2. Grow at least a few different things because then if it is a bad year for one thing, other things will do much better and you will have something to balance your dissapointment.

    3. Think about what you are going to be growing over winter in early spring. A lot of winter crops need to be sown in spring and every year about now we get loads of new growers on here asking what they can grow over winter when for a lot of things it is too late.

    4. Don't spend a fortune on expensive tools, plant pots, raised beds etc. Some people let their enthusiasm carry them all the way to the shops but these things don't really make that much difference. It's the time and energy you put in that does it, not the money (unless of course you pay people to do all the work for you but that's cheating smiley - winkeye).

Except for your fork. Always buy a good quality fork as you'll ask a lot of it and a snapped shaft can be dangerous and frustrating as well as costly.

Hi all, Just popped in inbetween feeding the baby and cleaning. thank you all for your kind words and advise smiley - biggrin. It is 250 sq ft ( out of 3 acres) i do beleive on site water and not too sure what condition yet but it should be in pretty good nick as i think the locals round here would have put up a stink smiley - winkeye . All the pitchs are being arranged over the next week and we will be getting them allocated at the begining of november. I have just told my Neighbour who is also a beginner nad she is going to apply for one as well.

I think it will be a lot of try and error over the first year, I've done quite a bit of reserch over the last few months but you don't know till you put into practice, but i am lucky enough to have a good little community in this little town so at the opening i'm hoping to have a good chat with them, and in the future may even invest in some live stock but right now i'll be happy with anything that grows.

Many thanks again to you all
    Donna

Yes, I completely agree with that. My fork is the only thing I spent a fair bit on. Lasted 6 years so far and everyone who tries it says how nice it is to dig with!

    Great news. Congratulations and enjoy.

Best advice I can give is to take it slow at first. It`s a marathon not a sprint.
