When should I dig up my Sweet potatoes? They have started to flower, and the tops still look green and lush...........

You can dig sweet potatoes anytime - lucky you if you've got some
decent tubers.
The vine will keep growing until the first frost - in the tropics they are evergreen. You need to get the tubers out by then at the latest.

That is a veg' I'm going to try next year! Cheers, Tony.
I am aiming to dig them up tomorrow, all being well weatherwise! and I shake off this dreadful cold..........shall let you know the results!
Hope you get a good lot, am very interested!
Well, have dug up said Sweet potatoes and I have to say.........it was a rather disappointing result, only a couple of decent size ones and the 'rest' were small and mis shapen efforts. I don't think I'll try these again, although I thought the weather conditions were about right, obviously they weren't right enough! and they were an expensive experiment - but hey ho there's enough there for a curry (yum)
Save some of the smaller tubers and pot them up in the warm and you can get new slips for free.
Also you can give them a good early start.
If you want to try this I can post more details although it's very simple

Thanks, I would be interested to find out about trying to propagate from the small tubers......can you help?

luvlottie,
hopefully calculad will reply in more detail than I can, however when he refers to 'slips' he means the shoots that will appear from tubers if you let them sprout.
When a tuber sprouts, each of the shoots or slips, when about 6" long can be taken off to make a separate plant - I guess you would pot each of the slips up into a separate pot in a greenhouse and plant out when the weather is warm enough.
I don't know for sure, I've only grown sweet potatoes in a warmer climate where you just bung the slips in the ground and away they go!
Thanks for that.........
I did buy slips and looking at my pathetic attempt? I think i could replant some of the immature roots and try again for next year, but I feel it may temperature dependant as they need warmth for a long time.......so i shall try again if time allows if not to the supermarket I go if I need a sweet potato!!!
I am afraid that sweet potatoes are a sub tropical plant and are unlikely to do here well except in very sheltered spots in the south of the country
They also take up a lot of ground in the process.
