Hi All,
This year I planted some bulb flowers in my allotment to use for cut flowers. Lillies and Gladioli.
My question is, can I cut them every year or will this exhaust the plant? Should I only cut them every second, third year?
I cut them halfway this year so there was still foliage to photosynthesize and I fed with a good dose of potash after cutting but I just wondered.
Many Thanks
That's really interesting, Vixxihibiscus. I planted some very expensive lily bulbs this year in pots, but they didn't flower until September when the wind got them. Do I cut them down now, or what do I do with them? Any advice please? I am in the west coast of Scotland with loads of wind.
When I cut the flower stems of my gladioli I try to leave as much leaf behind as possible to help buld corms for next year. I think cutting flowers does not exhaust the plant because it stops it producing seed, which I believe tkes a lot of energy. With some lilies there is only one stem, isn't there? So if you are going to use the flowers for decoration the leaves will go as well.
I am a novice with flowers, but as you didn't get many replies, I'm just passing on my small experience. My gladdies didn't do well the next year because I forgot to plant them out at the right time. They got buried in my overloaded shed! You'll do better, I expect.
As well as leaving as much leaf as you can, it's a good idea to feed - liquid feed if necessary - when you remove the flowers, so they can build up their bulbs/corms for next year. That's always the advice with daffs, tulips and spring bulbs after they've finished flowering or been cut. Worth trying with lilies and glads too?

Many Thanks,
I think I'll just play it by era and see how they look next year. Decide then.
I agree totally, but thanks for all the advice.
