Some people feel this topic could be better named with one suggestion being:
Edible gardening
Other feel it is fine as it is.
I'm inclined to think that 'Allotment tales' is too vague and may put off anyone who doesn't actually have an allotment, especially if they are new to the board AND new to veg/fruit gardening.
What do you think? Can you suggest any other (sensible) names for this topic?
Jen

Hello Jen - thanks for suggesting a poll.
I like "Edible Gardening" but wonder whether - since the phrase "growing your own fruit & veg" seems to be everywhere in the press & on TV these days, would some people prefer to have "growing your own" as the title?
My own vote would go for "Edible Gardening" tho! Cheers! Ma.
Yes, I agree.
"Edible gardening" or "Grow your own - fruit and veg" are better titles than Allotment Tales".
Although I grow neither fruit nor veg, I would like it called Edible Gardening - then I'd know what to avoid!!! I go on this board, at the moment, in case anyone is growing cut flowers on their lottie .
"Pests and Blight" might be an alternative!!!!

How about "Stuff you eat" and "Stuff you look at"? Cheers, Tony.

Edible Gardening sounds a good title as will also draw in people who grow fruit/veg in containers/back gardens.
I think Homegrown would be a sensible name for this topic.
Homegrown suggests "fruit & veg" to most people, and even it is grown on an allotment it is still classed as homegrown.
When I joined the gardening board not so long ago the garden inspiration topic conjured up images of flowers and shrubs.
The garden clinic conjured up thoughts of diseased plants etc. and the Allotment tales topic was rather vague as you have suggested.
So I think Homegrown would be better suited, even if I say so myself
Nice suggestion, Wokman - I was quite happy with Allotment Tales (It did not deter me, although I do not have an "official" allotment, more an unofficial "landshare", thanks to a generous farming neighbour.) But Homegrown does indeed describe what we're all doing, the growers of edibles and the growers of ornamentals alike.
I'm happy with allotment tales and haven't been put off despite not having an allotment, I think everybodies views and messages are equally considered regardless of where the fruit or veg is grown.
If change must happen and it sounds like it's going to regardless both edible garden and homegrown are good idea's.
Whilst I do eat the nasturtiums and marigolds which I grow, I haven't yet started on the lilies or dahlias or carnation that I grow as cut flowers for my flat.
A quick glance at the board will show that we get many newbies who are not put off by "Allotment Tales". It is tried and tested,so what is the point in changing it

Exactly my sentiments, Honeysuckle!
I like the idea of "Grow your own" but "Edible gardening" would also be quite fun.

Hello Jen - I know this isn't the correct place to use for this request, but don't know where else..... when you asked about adding a link ref the Search Facility, & I replied saying "yes", I didn't realise you'd go on to close the current thread itself. As it now only shows as a link on the Allotment Tales board, many people who need it might not find it easily. Is there any chance you could find a different place for the link - maybe a "sticky" or something on the Main Page? Thanks in advance. Ma.
I found the search facility easy enough but if it's going to be moved again I'd suggest the top left hand side of the gardening message board page where it lists the message boards.

'Grow your own' or 'Edible Gardening' sound fine to me. I agree that the allotment gardening title may not encompass everyone. I always imagine the allotment gardening thread as being peopled by an earthy bunch sitting around in a virtual shed discussing the size of their onions etc.

The waiting list for an allotment is so long here that they have stopped adding anyone else to it. Calling the board "Allotment tales" is rather rubbing salt in the wound!
Aspidistra
Your imagination runs away with you, I live next door to an allotment and an earthy bunch they are not, a better description would be a colliderscope of different personalities from different walks of life brought together by one common interest.
I certainly don't fit the bill of being the earthy type, people are often suprised to learn I grow veg let alone recycle. Me thinks it is the manicured nails which causes disbelief, having blonde hair and being female doesn't help either

Why not just call it 'The Vegetable Patch'. That covers everything from fruit to flowers, allotments to gardens; one bed to a large area; a few pots to a walled garden - I wish.

What a lovely word, Zoomer44 - colliderscope - very descriptive!
On the topic, there are lots of good suggestions here, and anything is better than Allotment Tales.

As long as the general ethos of this board is not changed much I am not bothered either way.
Having suggested Edible Garden in the first place I'd naturally go with that but Home Grown would be just as good.
Both titles are finctional and obviously include fruit, veggies, herbs and flowers grown for consumption rather than ornament. Both would naturally include cultivation techniques, best varieties and methods, pests, diseases and other problems with all things edible.

This is all very well, but how will people with allotments find it?
Also a lot of people grown flowers on there allotments and they are not edible. (Well not many of them.)
The point is to encourage people to pose questions relating to edible gardening on one board. At the moment there's a lot of crossover between the Allotments board and the Clinic so some questions get left unanswered. Some veggie growers only ever look at the Allotment board.
Personally, I think anyone smart enough to have an allotment and an internet link is smart enough to see that Edible Gardening will cover Allotment topics. Growing flowers for ornament, whether as cut or garden flowers, would come under the other board which also needs a more relevant name.

How about What crops up? Q and A's could include everything from allotmenteers to organic gardeners and container gardeners as well. Just a suggestion from a newcomer. Will.

I reckon if it's not broken it does'nt need fixed. I'm happy enough with allotment tales.
Perhaps it`s the other board, Garden Clinic, that needs renaming.
Maybe it`s time to go right back to basics and ask the question of each of the 4 boards - "What do we want this board to do?".
Then name each board appropriately to achieve those ends.
So here, the question is "What do we see as the purpose of Allotment Tales." and "Is it achieving that end?"
If the answere is "yes", then it doesn`t need changing.

Having reached the age of bewilderment, where I can remember who I sat next to at Primary School, but not what I had for my breakfast, let's keep it just the way it is!
I do not fancy spending the rest of my life trying to find a re-named site!
I actually think the title "Alotment Tales" has an imaginative undercurrent to it, which none of the suggested replacements can claim to contain. One can easily write a book using the title!
However, change for change's sake is common enough.
After making the initial posting prehaps Jenifer should give some more input now and tell use what her views are.
I like the title "Allotment Tales". It did not put me off. Although I no longer have an allotment I am still interested in vegetable growing and land management. I enjoy reading the threads and occasionally contributing.

I know exactly what you mean and agree with you!
The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú is just being the same old Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú which is like a lemming looking for the cliff top!
Nobody has problems with the current board but they have to create 'make work' to justify their staffing costs.......'Jennifer' is probably a neighbours son of one of the directors doing work experience!
richard
I'm with BaraGwenith (the vegetable patch) but then again, I AM old.
Ray
I've always thought the title 'Allotment tales' a bit naff.
'Allotmenteer’s Corner', Allotmenteering', or 'Allotment Gardening' would be my suggestions.
Me too but Alotment anything doesn't cover those of us with a veggie plot in the garden and no allotment and leads to people posting veggie questions on the Clinic board where they often get fewer expert replies.
Clinic is naff too.
Jennifer
Are you just a 'new broom' thinking that you have to make a mark by changing things that have been working perfectly well for a number of years?
It has been said many times 'if it ain't broke don't repair it'
You haven't given an answer yet on this topic nor on the previous topic in connection with the suposedly exciting changes planned for the message boards.
There have been many 'exciting' changes made over the years which have succeeded in making regular contributors with years of growing experience leave the message boards.
Has the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú decided that it wants to upset as many users as possible so that they leave the message boards and the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú can close them because of lack of use?
My own veggie growing is done within the confines of my own garden too.
I've never had an allotment, but I'm flexible enough to use this forum to swap notes about fruit 'n veg growing.
I grow my own in the back garden and realised that this site was as useful for me as it would be for someone with an allotment.
Grow your own would be a just as good. Edible gardening is a bit vague does that mean every type of edible or just herbs etc.
when will the final disistion be made?
wendy
Ok, lots of opinions there and not everyone agrees. No matter what decision I make, someone will be unhappy!
Many think that 'Allotment tales' is a little woolly or misleading.
Many think it's fine as it is.
Many have offered very sensible suggestions.
Please be reassured I'm not making changes just for the sake of it. I firmly believe that 'Allotment tales' is not the most useful title.
Not everyone who grows their own fruit and veg has an allotment and I do feel it could put people off.
Everyone understands 'Grow your own' and it isn't limited to vegetables.
Since there have been some objections to 'Edible gardening' and as far as I can remember, no objections to 'Grow your own' (except from those who think the title shouldn't change at all), I'm going to re-name the topic as such.
The re-naming won't happen until we get the new design.
The new design could happen by the end of this week *ducks for cover again*.
When I know for sure I will post on all the topics trying to explain as much as possible how things will be different. But things really won't be as different as you might expect.
Looking forward to your questions!
Jen
I don't have an allotment nor have I grown vegetables for years. That doesn't stop me from reading the posts and I am sure that it doesn't put others off either. Perhaps you should have a referendum.
Jennifer,
Excellent! I think "grow your own" is much better than the somewhat whimsical "Allotment tales"
Richard
Thank you, Jennifer.
I think 'grow your own' encompasses both veg and flowers, some people may not do both, could we have an extra board - grow your own veg and grow your own flowers.
Come on zoomer, everybody recognises 'grow your own' as referring to veg. Jen (if she'll excuse the familiarity) now has to come up with a new name for "Garden clinic" which defines all non-edible gardening......which is a much harder challenge!

Zoomer - I think what Jennifer means by 'Grow your Own' is grow your own edibles, which will include fruit, veg, herbs etc.
If I am correct then flowers, shrubs and trees would come under a different heading.
I can sense coming out of Jen's ears as I type.
Just for the record Jen - Grow Your Own sounds good to me
I do indeed mean grow your own edibles. It's a very familiar phrase now and I'm sure that 99% of people would understand it to mean growing your own food so you don't have to buy it from a shop.
I disagree that it extends to flowers (unless of course they're being grown to be eaten!)
So, it's decided then. Topic will be re-named 'Grow your own'

Will the new board have a link up to the monthly magazine of the same title? Or is it already tied up with it in some way. I always thought the Beeb was not allowed to advertise like that.

Maybe all members will get a discount on the mag now. I find it good but rather pricey at £3.35 an issue. That would at least be a small compensation for messing us all about. " Ah well, it's an ill wind..."
There's always something positive, etc.

Bye the way, posters, the existing "growyourown.co.uk" has got a lot of helpful tips, for those who don't already use it. It could even be an alternative. I'm sure there won't be any confusion!

honeysuckle,
...have you got a financial interest in that magazine.....what with three posts in a row!
Without prejudice - the forum on that particular website is a load of "well-rotted stable manure" compared to here.

I cannot see any need or benefit to changing the name. 'Grow Your Own' is banal and could equally well be applied to the 'Garden Clinic' board.

Does this mean Jennifer, that if I want to discuss the hops, wallflowers, sweet william, tulips, daffodils and ornamental gourds that I grow in my plot, I should use the 'Garden Clinc' board?
