can you put carrots in this time of year? can you grow them through the winter? i have an allotment and raised boxes which i grew carrots in this summer. i want to grow them in my back garden, what can i grow them in?
many thanks
if you put them in at this time of year you run the risk of them running to seed.
of you are on very light soil they can be planted around chrtistmas time but they will not germinate in a hurry unless you put plastic over them
hence all the fields in Eat Anglia being covered in plastic for the eraly carrots

There are types of carrots that are suitable for autumn sowing and promise to give early spring carrots next year. One such variety is Nantes Frubund which come from T&M although I'm sure there are others. They're bred for autumn soing and are supposed to be exceptionally early and cold resistant. I sowed some back in september in a container at the allotment and they've germinated. I think there is a thread somewhere, or perhaps it's on another board.
Here it is:
We grew some last winter & they were a great success. They tasted fantastic too. Definitely recommend having a go
